Perfection in Filtration

Hengst at the 36th Vienna Motor Symposium

Functional integration in a small installation space, downsizing, and new approaches to lightweight construction: The challenges facing filtration and fluid management modules are constantly increasing. Hengst has been working on solutions for the vehicles of tomorrow and beyond using extensive development and engineering resources, the latest in-house manufacturing processes and competence spanning many decades. The company will be presenting the latest trends and a glimpse into upcoming developments at the 36th Vienna Motor Symposium (7 to 8 May 2015, Hofburg Vienna Congress Centre).

From engineering though to mass production.

In professional circles, Hengst is a synonym for high-quality and technologically forward-thinking filtration solutions. The company has been involved in new technological leaps for a long time as a result of close, long-term partnerships with renowned vehicle manufacturers in the field of systems and development. The latest facilities, such as those for die-cast aluminum and plastic injection molding, enable an above-average vertical range of manufacture and thus generate short channels from the initial idea through to mass production – another unique selling point of Hengst that its partners in the automobile industry really appreciate.

‘Made by Hengst’ developments and innovations are constantly setting new benchmarks in efficiency, weight and installation space reduction as well as in ecological and economical aspects. With locations on four continents Hengst has a global presence – and is always in close proximity to its clients.

Cabin filters: The best way to beat pollen dirt and other impurities

Experts are unanimous: Clean, conditioned air inside the vehicle acts against the threat of fatigue, meaning the driver can stay concentrated and alert, thus making driving safer. Allergy suffers are no longer at risk, as they are protected against pollen and other allergens, at least in the vehicle. However, regular replacement of the cabin filter is crucial for effective operation.

This is because cabin filters prevent harmful particles down to 3µm (0.003 mm) or allergenic pollen from finding their way into the vehicle. In conjunction with air-conditioning, filtration also helps to keep vehicle occupants alert. Experts estimate that almost one in five Germans suffer from hay fever – and the number of those affected is continuing to rise. High concentrations of pollen can accumulate in vehicles in particular, as can dust, soot and exhaust gases. This can lead to acute problems for allergy sufferers and asthmatics, and may even have a negative effect on their ability to concentrate.

As a development partner and series supplier, Hengst manufactures filters in original equipment quality corresponding to the high specifications and requirements of automobile manufacturers. High-quality materials and the familiar excellent machining qualities ensure effective functional operation. The extensive portfolio includes particle filters that absorb pollen, dust and soot, as well as activated carbon filters that also keep unpleasant odors at bay. Both types of filter have demonstrated their ability to achieve efficiencies of around 100 percent.

Opportunities for the workshop

Workshops can use this opportunity for extra attractive sales by approaching customers in regard to specific service issues during regular service schedules. The vehicle manufacturers usually specify a replacement anyway after 12,000 to 15,000 kilometers, but no later than one year. We recommend replacing the filter twice a year if the vehicle is used intensively: In the spring, as a great deal of impurities have accumulated over the winter, and in the autumn so as to remove pollen and dead leaves.

The potential that workshops can tap into in addition to the existing service orders is therefore easy to extrapolate. And to make it easier for vehicle technicians to install brands they are unfamiliar with as well, Hengst provides easy-to-follow installation instructions for all filter types in its online cataloge at www.hengst-catalog.com, just as in every product package.

Practical experience: Good reasons to replace the cabin filter regularly

  • Replace the filter at least once a year or, if you drive a lot, twice a year.
  • Only in this way can you guarantee an effective filtration of fine dust, pollen etc. from the air. The air quality inside the vehicle has a major effect on the concentration and health of the occupants.
  • A regular filter replacement protects the motor of the fresh air fan, as the air stream can flow freely.
  • Unfiltered or poorly filtered air can leave behind an unsightly film of dirt on the inside of the windshield.
  • Minimized exposure to odors

Hengst is solidly on track

International growth anticipated for fiscal year 2015

The Hengst Group has started fiscal year 2015 with positive expectations: international growth should make it possible to build on the development trend of recent years. The Group ended the year 2014 with sales of just under 400 million euros.

Continued strong sales growth in 2015 is expected by the Group in particular in the growing automotive markets in China and India. Thus, a new Joint Venture was recently established for the market in India. The IAM (Independent Aftermarket) segment in Southeast Asia, supervised by the newly founded sales company in Singapore, should also experience vigorous growth. “We are well positioned worldwide and thus provide for proverbial short distances. That is a key advantage that our customers have learned to appreciate,” says Managing Director Dr. Robert Stoesser. In addition, Hengst wants to strategically expand its market position in industrial filtration. The focus will be on dust removal solutions, filter systems for cleaning equipment and power tools as well as filtration applications for compressors and compactors.

Its continuous development over recent years ranks Hengst amongst the fastest-growing medium-sized companies in Germany, which was also confirmed in January by the “WirtschaftsWoche” magazine’s annual rankings in which Hengst took 32nd place. Hence, a perfect start into the new fiscal year.

Hengst is continuing to build on its presence in the growth market of India

Joint venture set up – Daimler India among the first customers

Precisely two years ago, Hengst set up its first-ever site in India. Now, the specialist in filtration and fluid management is continuing to build on its presence in the sub-continent. Indeed, just a few short days ago, the contracts were signed for a joint venture with Indian filter specialist Luman Automotive. Under the corporate name “Hengst Luman India Pvt. Ltd.”, the new company will supply India’s booming automotive industry with custom-made filtration solutions. The Hengst office in Bangalore has already successfully collaborated with leading manufacturers such as Daimler India Commercial Vehicles over the last few years – these collaborations are now to be intensified.

Hengst CEO Dr. Robert Stößer is delighted to reveal that the merger with Luman is laying the groundwork for Hengst’s high-quality products being marketed with even greater success on the growth market of India. “With this joint venture, we have merged two family-run companies that share the same values and objectives. Customer proximity, quality and technological innovations will be key to our success on the Indian automobile market.”

Luman Automotive Systems Pvt. Ltd. was founded in 1978 and is nowadays counted among the top six filter suppliers in India – outstanding knowledge of the market situation on the ground is therefore a matter of course. In addition to ultra-modern filtration technologies, Hengst’s contribution to the joint venture is its close, trusting partnerships with virtually all the automotive manufacturers in the world. With its proven recipe for success – maintaining a global presence while being on the ground at the same time to ensure closeness to clients from industry – Hengst is now keen to successfully tap into the Indian market too.
