Well-filtered: Hengst sets an example in sustainability at the IAA

Münster’s specialist in filtration and fluid management will showcase future prospects for the passenger vehicle sector

Often it is the innovative solutions from the supplier industry that are presented for the first time at the IAA, and that set the trends for the automotive future. One of these technologies will be celebrating its world premier at the booth belonging to Hengst Filtration, the specialist in filtration and fluid management: The sustainable and eco-efficient oil filter concept, Blue.on. In addition, the company will be presenting trailblazing products from sectors that include fluid management, crankcase ventilation, transmission oil filtration, air and cabin filtration for use as original equipment.

Blue.on: the sustainable alternative to the screw-on oil filter

Approximately 800 million vehicles currently on the road are using a spin-on oil filter. In the case of conventional closed systems, it is necessary to dispose of the entire unit every time it is replaced. The Blue.on filter concept from Hengst provides a sustainable alternative. It consists of a cover, which is designed as a lifetime component, a connector with an integrated filter bypass and return valve, and a replaceable filter element. When changing the filter, only the completely incinerable filter element needs to be replaced. The Blue.on oil filter concept can be used with a conventional spin-on filter interface, making it possible to retrofit an existing engine family.

New dimensions for compact fluid management

In the professional world, Hengst Filtration is synonymous with high-quality and technologically pioneering filtration solutions. With comprehensive development and engineering resources, state-of-the-art production processes and decades of expertise, Hengst meets all of the requirements placed on ultra-modern filtration and fluid management modules. As such, the focus is squarely on functional integration in a compact space, downsizing, and new methods of achieving a lightweight design. This includes the oil coolant module for the new 3.0-liter six-cylinder gasoline engine from Mercedes Benz, for example. Made of die-cast aluminum, the module housing is manufactured right at the Hengst facility. The oil / water heat exchanger is integrated in the compact design of the module. The use of the Energetic® 7 cellulose filter insert is especially sustainable and environmentally friendly, while a seal lock on the filter insert prevents incorrect installation.

Crank case ventilation for every need

Hengst offers the perfect solution for all engines and country-specific exhaust gas regulations. The spectrum ranges from efficient, cost-effective entry-level solutions in oil mist separation to high-end solutions that meet Euro VI or Tier 4 requirements or higher. The electrically-driven Blue.tron disc separator from Hengst is currently the most technologically advanced crankcase ventilation system. It provides highly efficient oil separation and active blow-by extraction for crankcase ventilation. Blue.tron significantly reduces the intake of oil into the engine’s intake system. This makes it possible for gasoline and diesel engines to increase the boost pressure level, which can be used to increase engine power and engine efficiency. Moreover, the reduced accumulation of soot in the intake system safeguards the engine power and emission behavior throughout the life of the engine.

Transmission oil filtration for better efficiency in automatic transmissions

Modern automatic transmissions are capable of effectively reducing CO2 emissions. Optimizing the oil supply, which is still responsible for significant losses in the transmission, offers an optimal possibility for further increase in efficiency. Here, Hengst utilizes its innovative transmission oil filter concepts to achieve decisive differential pressure advantages with the highest levels of separation. Suction oil filters are thereby integrated as main flow filters upstream of the pump, while pressure oil filters are placed upstream of these suction oil filters in order to achieve higher oil purity classes so that the hydraulic control valves can be protected. In both types of filtration, Hengst focuses on system concepts and also offers the development of suction oil filters for the series production of automatic transmissions and modern oil management systems for electric axle drives. The cooling module for the pressure oil filter is suitable for the integration of additional functions such as flow-integrated oil-water heat exchangers, oil conducting ducts, valves, sensors or transmission oil pumps, for example.

Clean air protects the engine

Hengst air filters protect the engine with their special paper embossing, which ensures maximum filter stability and avoids folded packaging. Only high-quality, impregnated filter paper is used, which remains pressure resistant and tear resistant even in wet weather. The paper is also flame retardant, thus preventing engine fires as a result of flying sparks. Hengst air filters remain pulsation resistant and achieve consistently high levels of separation even under dynamic engine conditions.

Five layers for an outstanding climate in the vehicle

Hengst offers its customers a wide range of products from standard cabin filters, to activated carbon filters, and five-layer high-tech filters. The new five-layer cabin filter provides reliable protection against pollen, fine dust, molds as well as spores, odors and bacteria. It consists of an electrostatic medium, the pre-filter function of which retains coarse particles, while a filter fleece increases dust absorption, and the activated carbon layer separates vapors, odors and harmful gases such as ozone, nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide. In addition, there is a meltblown medium, which retains fine dust and microparticles having a diameter of less than 2.5 μm, as well as a biofunctional layer with an anti-microbial effect.

Pure air in vehicles!

Hengst ensures the best air quality

In times of increasing discussion about dust pollution in traffic and the rising numbers of people with allergies, air purity inside vehicles is becoming more and more of a focus for drivers, especially drivers with families. With the new cabin filter, Hengst SE & Co. KG, the filtration specialists from Münster, offer a powerful next-generation cabin filter. Pollen, fine dust, mold and spores, odors, and bacteria are reliably filtered out of the air. This makes an important contribution to well-being, health, and active accident prevention.

A good climate – happy customers

Like a vacuum cleaner, the ventilation system of a car sucks about 540,000 liters of air per hour into the interior, and with it comes exhaust, pollutants, allergens, and odors from the environment. This results in concentrations inside the car roughly five times higher than on the roadside. This can result in a reduction in the driver’s concentration, and can trigger allergic reactions. Also, the risk of accidents rises. However, the new high-quality interior filter can help. It leaves the air in the cabin cleanly filtered and protects those inside vehicle from harmful environmental influences.

Five layers ensure optimal results

The cabin filter consists of five different layers, which achieve optimal results in a clean and coordinated manner. Compared to standard activated carbon filters, also neutralizes allergens and bacteria. The first layer comprises an electrostatic pre-filter medium that captures coarse particles. The second filter medium captures more dust; the third, with an active carbon layer, separates vapors, odors, and harmful gases like ozone, nitrogen oxide, and sulfur dioxide. Number four, the Meltblown medium, retains fine dust and microparticles with a diameter of less than 2.5 μm. The fifth bio-functional layer has an anti-microbial effect. With the interior filter, the customer not only has a vehicle interior that is free from unpleasant odors, but above all clean air that is free from harmful substances. This means that stuffy air in the car is now a thing of the past.
